This rum has a funk that is noticeable the second you inhale it. And I’m not saying this in a negative sense – you get a super sweet, overripe version of the flavor that you would expect in the fruit once it starts to spin. But there is also a deeper and darker note, which is reinforced by the barrel aging and comes closer to the yeast tone that comes from a fermentation tank. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Jamaican rum was revered for its deep, full flavors and pleasant aromas. The more familiar “Common Clean” light and / or cute styles appeared on offer today in the mid 20th century, made from the column alembic product introduced in the late 1950s. A Jamaican tradition is the use of native wild yeast in the region in the fermentation process, possibly one of the main reasons for the special body and taste.

The Smith & Cross was more of an overripe pineapple / orange fruit so it’s hard to tell which was stronger as they have different grades. It probably depends on what you’re most sensitive to: Where I’m not that interested in bananas anymore, Doctor Bird has a stronger “funk” for me. Smith and Cross is a waterproof aged rum that I’ve found great in many cocktails. In a glossy 2014 wine enthusiast review, they found that she “craves quite a bit of lime” and recommended it for tiki cocktails, including the famous daiquiri. I tried some apple, mango, banana, and apricot there, all of which are tempered with a bit of oak and leather to add depth and complexity. A strong rival from Pusser for my favorite rum so far. He doesn’t have to age anymore, he already has an abundance of suppleness and taste. My only criticism is that this doesn’t make a good mojito and mojitos are my favorite rum-based cocktail, but then again, I don’t usually expect this type of rum to be good in a mojito.

The Funk Is Back

There is alcohol on the nose, but not as much as I expected from a young man with 57% ABV, and a bit of that Jamaican funk too, but not much. The label on the back says it is a mix of plummer and Wedderburn rums. “Plummer” and “Wedderburn” happen to be names in a classification system used by the British Admiralty, and I can’t find much more about that particular system, but I’ll keep looking. Smith & Cross is a 50/50 mix of Wedderburn under 1 year old and Plummer under 18 months to 3 years old.

Of course, the molasses and brown sugar you would expect from a rum of this color. But tobacco and lime also provide even more aromas that are reminiscent of the tropics. There is a sense of place in all of these things and they held nothing back. And everything changes a little when you add water or your giant ice cube starts to melt. Its golden color implies more aging than you might expect – the oldest rum here is three years old and most are much younger. The “hogo” can be overwhelming for beginners, but for the seasoned nose and palate, it comes as layers of overripe tropical fruit caramelized in dark sugar.
